Kelly Cartwright Has Sights Set On Long Term Goal

by Kate McKenzie-McHarg on September 14, 2013

Kelly Cartwright, Australia’s Golden Girl from the London Paralympic Games, will miss the 2013-14 athletics season to focus on being the best athlete she can be in Rio in 2016.

Kelly had her sights set on the World Champs this year, but after surgery on her foot she wasn’t able to recover in time to take on the world’s best, and made the tough decision to withdraw from that competition.

“Unfortunately my body is still not right, and chasing competition after competition is not allowing me enough time to overcome my injuries,” says Kelly.

“In almost three years to the day the crowd will welcome the best athletes with a disability in the world into the Rio Paralympic Stadium, and I want to be there.

“To give myself the best chance of achieving that goal, I need some time to get my body right. I feel this break from the running track will help with my long-term goal of Rio 2016.

“Fortunately, I’m surrounded by good people who believe in me, and their support has been vital. It’s never easy overcoming injuries, but having some distractions away from the track is very helpful physically, mentally and emotionally.

“Coming up soon is a much-anticipated holiday abroad that will see me away for all of September. When I return, I plan to work hard with my sponsors and continue to try to inspire others as a motivational speaker.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to my family and my coach along with The Victorian Institute of Sport, Athletics Australia, Qantas, Cotton On and 776BC, all of whom have been very supportive of my approach to my long-term goal.”
