The international canoe season got underway recently with the Canoe Sprint World Cup I being held on the 23 - 26 May 2019 and World Cup II on the 31 May - 2 June 2019. The Australia squad, which included some new faces has been performing exceptionally well.
This 2019 international season is an important milestone for the athletes as they put their sights on to the Olympic qualifiers and then the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This season has provided an important reference point for athletes to base their upcoming training on, as well as a great opportunity to test some combinations in the team boats.
World Cup I which was held in Poznan, Poland provided a great starting point for the athletes. The event saw one gold and two silver medals awarded and one silver and one bronze in the paracanoe classes.
Alyssa Bull took the gold in the women’s K1 1000 with 776BC athlete Alyce Burnett taking out the silver. In the men’s K2 500 Riley Fitzsimmons and Jordan Wood put in a solid performance to take out the silver medal. In the paracanoe Amanda Reynolds won the bronze in the KL3 200 and Susan Seipel claimed the silver in the VL2 200 to round out a successful weekend of racing.
The team was then off to Duisburg, Germany for the World Cup II with the paracanoe team getting a break till August before they have their World Championships in Szeged, Hungary.
In Duisburg for World Cup II the Australian team had another successful weekend. The team this time picked up two golds and a silver and also performed well in the team boats with seven crews making it to their A finals.
Alyce Burnett and Alyssa Bull swapped their positions in the women’s K1 5000 from the Poznan women’s K1 1000, with Alyce taking the gold and Alyssa the silver. Alyssa also backed up her K1 1000 taking out the gold again.
The team now has a period of training before the Olympic qualifying World Championships in Szeged, Hungry 21-25 August 2019.
