Sailing World Cup Hyères, will provide the Australian sailors one of the final chances to race their competition and make their mark ahead of the 2016 Rio Games.
Strong, cold, northwesterly winds, are predicted for the World Cup from 27 April to 1 May which will include all ten Olympic and two Paralympic classes.
776BC athletes Tom burton, Haylee Outteridge and Nina Curtis will all be setting sail at the regatta. Burton will be measuring up his Olympic competition as he hunts his fourth consecutive World Cup victory in the Laser class.
Burton commented, “this is the first event (for me) after being selected for the Australian Olympic Team, so it’s obviously going to be a nice event with less pressure than the past year.”
Outteridge and Curtis will also be looking to make their presence known in the 49er FX class as Rio selection is still up for grabs. Outteridge and Curtis will line up against a strong fleet and two other Australian crews.
2012 Gold Medalist Mat Belcher and current 470 crewman Will Ryan are re-focusing after last weeks win at the European Championships. “We’re trying to tick a few boxes here and making some big steps as we are coming into the Games”, Belcher said. “Most of the top guys are at this event and everyone who will be at the Games will be racing here.”
Defending Olympic 49er champions Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen will not compete in Hyeres, opting to train elsewhere.
The regatta provides opportunity for sailors to impress ahead of final selections. We wish all members of the Australian Sailing Team all the best for a successful World Cup.
