As Henley Royal Regatta (HRR) qualifiers drew to an end on Friday, we had our first look at what is set to be an exciting week of racing. With 557 crews from 15 nations and 24 Olympic medallists set to take on the famous 2112m course in the coming week, 2017’s HRR is promising some exciting, top quality rowing. Over the five days of competition, 60 Australian athletes including seven Olympians will be in contention for titles.
A particularly exciting race for Australia will be the Silver Goblets and Nickalls’ Challenge Cup where we find Rio Silver medallists and 776BC athletes Josh Dunkley-Smith and Joshua Booth in the men’s pair. The two will be taking to the course as clear favourites among the nine pairs on show, however tough competition from the USA, Hungary, France and NZ should not be underestimated. Meanwhile the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup looks set to be one of the most exciting events of the whole regatta. Australian National Schoolboy’s VIII+ champions Scotch College Melbourne, will come face-to-face with both the GB and USA national school champions in their pursuit of international success.
Other top Australians to watch are Sydney Rowing Club who have crews qualified for the Wyfold Challenge Cup and the Britannia Challenge Cup. Meanwhile three time Olympian and single scull gold medallist Kim Brennan will race in a composite E&Y crew alongside three other Rio Olympians from the UK, USA and the Netherlands.
