The canoe international season is fully underway with the first slalom event for the season. Held from the 14th – 16th June 2019, the Slalom World Cup 1 was raced at the Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, Great Britain, which was the sight for the 2012 London Olympic Games regatta.
The Australian team, led by World No.1 Jessica Fox, had a solid event with some strong performances. Daniel Watkins made his way into his second ever senior final which resulted in a 10th place that he will be looking to improve on as he goes into World Cup 2. Jessica who had a world record breaking season last year picked up bronze in both the K1 and C1 events. She will be looking to improve in World Cup 2 as she continues to build momentum towards Tokyo 2020. “I had an amazing season last year and it’s hard to back that up, but I’m feeling good and paddling well and even though I didn’t show it to my potential today, I’m still pleased to come away with two medals and I look forward to next week and get to Bratislava for the second World Cup.” Said Fox.
The international season continues over the coming weekends with 3 more World Cup events followed by the World Cup Final. The season then culminates with the World Championships in September which is the key Olympic qualifying event and a priority for the Australian Team.
