Encouraging Start for Young Australian Crews on European Tour

by Cameron McKenzie-McHarg on June 20, 2017

As the World Rowing Cup II draws to an end in Poland, Australia can be proud and encouraged by solid performances across the board. With many athletes making their senior crew debuts, Australia managed to qualify eight boats into the A-finals setting themselves in a great position going into Sunday’s racing. Finishing the weekend ranked third in the medal tables, Australia showed their potential with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

The Women’s Four were the first final to take to the water, kicking off the day on a good foot for Australia, not only winning, but also setting a new World Cup best-time of 6:22. Following this the men’s four went on to win their final after a close fight with the GB crew. The Australian Women’s Quadruple Scull then managed to secure a second place finish while the Women’s Pair and Double Scull both crossed the line in third place bringing home bronze. The Men’s Double Scull and Eight finish off the Australian A-final starters both finishing fourth and thus slimly missing out on medals. Reflecting on a positive weekend, Performance Director, Bernard Savage said: “We’ve had some good performances from a young group of athletes here at their first World Rowing Cup of the season. We will go back to Italy now to work on improving further on these results ahead of World Rowing Cup 3 in Lucerne and ultimately we’re looking to build towards even better results at the 2017 World Championships in USA.”
