As the Junior World Championships came to an end overnight in Lithuania we saw some great performances from the young Australian team. The Junior Men’s Double Scull of Cormac Kennedy-Leverett and Fergus Hamilton produced a particularly strong performance to take home the title. Kennedy-Leverett and Hamilton, who has only really had four consistent weeks of training together before the championship, managed to fight of the European Champions and race favourites, Germany. The double were the youngest crew of the final but managed to put in a solid race finishing in style well clear of their closest competition.
Meanwhile both the Men’s Quadruple Scull and the Women’s Eight finished third in their respective B finals, ending their championship ranked ninth in the world. The Junior Women’s Double Scull concluded their bid by winning their C final, thus ranking 13th in the world standings. Not a bad effort for such young crews who are showing a lot of potential.
As the Championships wrapped up Rowing Australia Deputy Performance Director, Jaime Fernandez said: “Congratulations to Cormac, Fergus and their coach Tom on a fantastic victory today. This was the first time that many of our Junior team had ever competed overseas at an event with such an unprecedented amount of entries. We believe, that while only one crew claimed gold this time around, there are many athletes in this team, and the pathway, who have podium potential and this is just the first stage of their journey. Thanks should go to RA’s Pathways Head Coach, Lyall McCarthy, Sports Science Lead Dr Tony Rice and team manager, Georgie Lee, for their leadership and guidance of the team during their overseas tour.”
