Records were broken as Australia laid down some spectacular performances at Henley 2018.
The Australian Men’s and Women’s Eights made a bold statement on the Thames on Sunday, securing the Grand Challenge Cup and the Remenham Challenge Cup at the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta. The race for women’s eights saw Australia take on Britain. Both crews had a strong start, resulting in the Australian crew equaling the record to the barrier. The Aussies maintained their lead down the course, fending off any challenge from the British National crew, to secure the Remenham Challenge Cup in 6:36, setting a new course record by 2 seconds.
In the men's eight, a tight contest between Australia and the Romanian National Team, saw the Aussie's claim the Grand Challenge Cup in a new course record of 5:53. The Aussie's had to come from behind to secure the Cup, with Romania leading to Fawley where they broke the record by one second. Perhaps it was the cheering crowds that propelled Australia to the lead, the Aussie crew making their move as they past the enclosures to claim the Cup by three quarters of a length, in the fastest time ever recorded on the Henley course. The weekend's racing has made a strong statement in the lead up to the Lucerne World Cup this weekend. We're definitely excited to see what these incredible athletes will do next.
