by Josie Parr on July 31, 2017

The Australian U23 national canoeing team have been hard at work in Pitesti, Romania, where the Junior and U23 Sprint Canoeing World Championships took place from the 27th- 30th July.

The Australian team were racing in custom 776BC kit, bringing the top-level apparel to the world stage. The outstanding Australian performer of the championship was Alyssa Bull, who took the title in the women’s U23 K1 1000 Canoe Sprint. Alyssa fought against strong headwinds to take an early lead in the race, she then pushed through fatigue, dominating the field and taking home the gold. Alyssa then went on to take silver in the 500m behind her teammate Aimee Fisher, who pulled out an incredible race winning by over two seconds. A strong performance from both girls leading to an Australian first and second to end the championships on a victorious note.

Other stand out performances came from Wood and Fitzsimmons who struggled against unfavourable lane draw to take bronze in the U23 K2 1000m.

Meanwhile Bill Bain finished eighth in the U23 K1 1000m final, while Jemma Smith took fifth in the junior K1 1000m final. Tiarnee Massie, Jemma Smith, Lucinda Kelly and Mackenzie Duffy finished their junior campaign with a first place in the B final.

Congratulations to all competing athletes from the 776BC team!
