The Australian Rowing Team have qualified eight boats for 2020 Tokyo Olympics and two boats for the Paralympics. They are the Men’s and Women’s Eight, Four and Pair and the Men’s Quad Scull and Women’s Double Scull for the Olympics.
The two Paralympic boats are the Men’s Single Scull and the Mixed Coxed Four. The Olympic qualification was complemented by the gold medals for the Women’s Four and PR2 Women’s Single Scull, Silver for the Women’s Pair, Women’s Eight, PR3 Men’s Pair and bronze for the Lightweight Men’s Single Scull, Men’s Pair and PR1 Men’s Single Scull.
The Women’s Four of Lucy Stephan, Sarah Hawe, Katrina Werry and Olympia Aldersey finished a superb competition by remaining undefeated. For the final they settled into the lead at the 500-meter mark with the Netherlands and the Danish sitting in second and third respectively. By the 1000-meter mark Australia and the Netherlands moved out by themselves and that’s the way it remained for the rest of the race. The Australian crew calmly taking the gold medal.
The PR2 Women’s Single Scull of Kathryn Ross finished her competition off with a great race. Taking the lead early and finding more than a boats length of room from the 500-meter mark, Kathryn comfortably raced her own race to claim the gold medal.
The weekend was filled with tough racing and Rowing Australia Performance Director, Bernard Savage, wrapped up the weekend saying, “This week has had some incredibly hard and tight racing across all boat categories so to come away with qualifying eight Olympic and two Paralympic boats for Tokyo is really pleasing. I am very proud of this Team and the way they have gone about their business this week. To have qualified a full complement of sweep boats for both the men and women is particularly pleasing. “All eyes are firmly on Tokyo now and I know the athletes, coaches and staff will be leaving no stone unturned in the quest for success at their respective Games.”
Australia can also look to the final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Gavirate, Italy which are both being held in May 2020 to qualify more boats for Tokyo 2020.
