JASPER LIU HAS BEEN A NATIONAL ROWING TEAM REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE UNITED STATES SINCE 2019.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR SPORT?
I started rowing in college after playing many different sports throughout my life. I tried it because the team was looking for novices, and I love being active, competitive, and part of a team!
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE, AND WHY?
One of my favorite rowing memories was the Head of the Charles in 2019. I was racing in the lightweight men's single, and for the entire second half of the race I could constantly hear people cheering for me! It was incredibly motivating and made for an awesome race atmosphere, plus makes me smile every time to think about all of the people I've met and friends that I've made through rowing.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR TOUGHEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE IN YOUR SPORT, AND WHAT DID IT TEACH YOU?
My toughest challenges in my rowing career have been injuries. I dealt with back and hip pain and discomfort on and off for two years, which was incredibly frustrating. Not being able to train at 100 percent made me feel like I was letting myself down, as well as my coach and teammates. But through the process of figuring out what was wrong and working to fix it, I learned so much more about my body and have become a better athlete on the other side.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? WHAT KEEPS YOU GETTING UP EVERY MORNING?
I want to see how good I can be, and I love to race! Showing up to training every day gives me another chance to improve, and hopefully once you add up all those small gains, it translates to winning some races. I also appreciate the social aspect - it's fun to show up and see my teammates every day.
