TARA RIGNEY HAS BEEN A NATIONAL ROWING TEAM REPRESENTATIVE FOR AUSTRALIA SINCE 2021.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR SPORT?
I rowed for a few years at school, along with a number of other sports, however stopped rowing in Year Ten in order to pursue netball. From 2016 - 2018 I played premier league netball and U19 NSW netball. During this time I ruptured my ACL in 2016 and then again in 2018. The second time I ruptured my ACL I was faced with another 10-12 months before playing a full netball game again. Approximately six months post knee reconstruction a coach (Alfie Young) reached out to see if I wanted to start rowing again. So I picked back up rowing in September 2018. I originally intended to use rowing as a way to gain fitness until my knee was fully healed. I ended up enjoying rowing so much I've stayed with it for the past four years now!
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE, AND WHY?
My most memorable performance was the Nell Slater Interstate Cup in 2021. This is a race when each state puts forward a single sculler to compete over 2km. I remember being particularly nervous for this race, as I hadn't had a great performance during the week long regatta in the single.....I few days prior I had fallen out of my single during a race. On the day we raced the Interstate Cup the weather was bad and the water was challenging. Overcoming my personal doubts and racing in that water was a big challenge for me. I remember looking out at the 1000m mark and seeing that I was a boat length down on first place. It was a tough fight to the line, but I ended up winning the race. I think this race is memorable because I can look back now and laugh at myself ... falling out of a boat is a humbling experience... but I was proud of myself for overcoming my fears of falling out again and putting out a solid race.
